Which companies are required to register?

Registration is mandatory for companies involved in the production, processing, storage, transport, supply, or sale of food products. Examples include:

• restaurants;

• caterers;

• butchers;

• supermarkets;

• healthcare organisations;

• food manufacturers.

Companies that sell food products online are also subject to the registration requirement.

Existing registrations must also be renewed

An important point to note is that the transition to MijnNVWA has not been automatically applied to existing registrations. If you are already registered with the NVWA or have an approval, you are still required to register your company through MijnNVWA. If your company has multiple locations, each location must be registered separately.

Annual review of company details

After registration, you are responsible for keeping your company details up to date. The NVWA sends an annual reminder to review and confirm your registration. This ensures that the register of food businesses remains accurate and allows the NVWA to contact companies more quickly in the event of food safety incidents or product recalls.

Why is registration important?

The registration requirement is established in the European Hygiene Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 852/2004). Maintaining an up-to-date register helps the NVWA identify businesses more efficiently, improve product traceability, and address food safety risks more effectively. As a result, registration directly contributes to better consumer protection.
